Barnaby and the Butcher

Barnaby and the Butcher write and perform across the broadly defined genres of Alt Country and Americana. Damon Barnaby’s madly skilled heritage electric guitar is magnified by Joshua Butcher’s powerfully rich and welcoming vocals. Their sound is complex and fervent, vacillating between Dark Country rock songs, bittersweet honeyed ballads, and traditional Country riffs; all of which is enhanced by Butcher’s clever, often heartbreaking lyrics. It is a style that evokes the mystery and nostalgia of Arizona's desert country while offering something entirely new. Their catalogue of originals is ever-expanding, and their uniquely-chosen covers include artists as wide ranging as Chris Stapleton, The Tragically Hip, Bonnie Raitt, John Hiatt, and Indigo Girls.
They make their home, and their music in the lush desert country of Tucson, Arizona; where the sun-soaked sand, tenacious scrub, and mysteriously winding canyons echo and ground their Dark Country sound. Since their start in 2021, they have been joined by Robin Messing on backup vocals, Doug “Hurricane” Floyd on electric guitar and mandolin, and John “The Monkey” McIntyre on percussion.
They have released multiple studio albums, including one recorded in Mississippi at Jim Dickinson's Zebra Ranch under the loving eye of Jimbo Mathus of The Squirrel Nut Zippers. They have opened for major touring acts including Los Lobos on New Years Eve at Fox Tucson Theatre. On March 31, 2026 they provide support for Grammy nominated and multi-award winning Americana band, The War and Treaty, also at Fox Tucson Theatre.
This is serious music by not-so-serious musicians.

We're back with new originals, new covers, same self-deprecating personalities. And some reasonably good talent.
