bodysong

bodysong’s emotional and dynamic original music has been described as deeply yet only vaguely familiar, and that while each member’s individual influences are discernible they are only ever a shade in the band’s overall sonic palette. It’s a deep bow to the mid-90s through mid-2000’s indie scene, like they’ve captured a sweet nostalgia for many of their formative musical years across genres like rock, post-rock, trip-hop, blues, folk, prog, surf, and jazz . Their songwriting is entirely collaborative, with one member usually bringing an idea in and allowing the group to mould and shape it like free-association where no idea is rejected outright before it’s given a fair shot.
Born in spring of 2023, bodysong began as a 4-piece instrumental rock project in the northeast foothills of tucson, az. Drawing on decades of combined experience in the local and regional music scene, the group gradually worked their way into recording their first EP, Greenlight in the winter of 2024, performing briefly as Lincoln at the Theater. As they were nearing completion on tracking and mixing, they connected with a vocalist who really gelled with the group and she made fast work of writing vocal melodies and lyrics that fit seamlessly into the existing recordings - the band had already returned the audio equipment they used for recording the instruments, so fully going back to square one would have been difficult. This culminated in the finished Greenlight EP, released in 2025, and the band started working their way into the local scene.
2025 also brought a major change to the group: just before the EP was released, one of the founding guitarists decided to part ways with the band, leaving the remaining 4 members to decide on a path forward. They decided to carry on with the project, and their new vocalist stepped up to the challenge of adding guitar playing to her repertoire, beginning a shift in the band’s tone that has continued to evolve through today.
The band recorded their follow-up EP, Regarding Ghosts & Reverb, in the summer of 2026, drawing a clear distinction between the band’s beginnings and where they were headed. With Regarding… released in early October 2026, both albums are now available on Bandcamp, Boogie.cool, and all major streaming platforms.
Jennifer Spector (vocals and guitar) is an award-winning songwriter whose music career kicked off busking across Europe - after returning to the US she formed several bands showing off her love of rock, jazz, and folk, but her folk roots took her across the West and she now calls Tucson home. Wes McCanse (guitar) is a lifelong Tucsonan and has been a mainstay in the local music scene since the early 2000’s in bands like …music video? - who garnered national attention at SXSW and NPR Music - or the electronic Musica Obscura, and was also a member of the 80s inspired The Daring Few. Morgan Schlaline (drums) landed in the Tucson scene via northern California, performing with hallmark rock groups the Monitors and Los Guapos, and also the musical-comedy duo the Croutons. Ian Williams (bass) first entered the Tucson scene with the pop-punk-chiptuners The Runaway Five, found his way to the prog rock power trio Sorry About the Garden and the dark-folk project Ex Cowboy, and spent time with dozens of genre-bending smaller projects along the way. While he shares his name with a much more famous guitar player, this one keeps his attention fully on bass.
